Description

Kentucky Bluegrass is a vigorous cool-season grass that forms a beautiful lush green turf, making it a top choice for lawns. It is a species that spreads through underground rhizomes, which allows it to self-repair when damaged.

The plants quickly regenerate from wear and tear, such as foot traffic, making it a good choice for high-traffic lawns, grassed pathways, sports fields and pastures subject to intensive grazing.

Kentucky Bluegrass has good disease resistance and grows well as a single species or mixed with others, such as Perennial Ryegrass or Creeping Red Fescue.

Although it has an extensive fibrous root system, the plants do best when supplied with good moisture and fertility. Under good growing conditions, Kentucky Bluegrass is highly competitive, helping to keep out weeds.

When used as a cover crop, its thick root mass helps prevent erosion, builds soil organic matter, improves soil tilth and captures residual nitrogen.

Kentucky Bluegrass is best planted before or after the hottest summer temperatures. Some growers add Annual Ryegrass (10 to 25%) when planting to act as a nurse crop during the first season. The fast germinating Annual Ryegrass forms a quick protective cover that shades the soil while the slow germinating Kentucky Bluegrass takes its time to establish.
