BENEFITS & USES
Legume cover crops are used extensively by organic growers as green manures to increase fertility levels. Legumes can establish a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, known as rhizobia. This allows the plants to increase nitrogen levels in the soil without using fertilizer. They also prevent erosion, improve soil structure, and add organic matter when incorporated.
