Cover crops can be planted in spring, summer or fall! Remember that ¼ to ⅓ of your growing area should be planted to green manure cover crops every year. This ensures your soil stays healthy and productive.

Seeds will store for at least 1 to 2 years.

Description

Alsike Clover is a versatile cover crop that can grow in areas where many other clover species struggle. It can tolerate wet growing conditions and even survive flooding for up to 2 or 3 weeks. It grows well in soils that are too acidic or alkaline for other clovers and also performs well on clay soils. Alsike does poorly under dry conditions and does not tolerate drought.

Like other clovers, Alsike is a legume that fixes between 70 - 120 lbs of nitrogen per acre (1.5 - 3 lbs/1000 sq. ft) and scavenges other nutrients adding fertility to the soil. It also provides habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects. Its biomass breaks down easily when mowed, producing readily available organic matter.

Alsike Clover is best planted as a garden companion cover crop or in combination with other species to grow a diverse canopy cover. Its weak stems make it prone to falling over and lodging, so other species, such as grasses, help to keep the plants upright. It can be planted into bare soil or overseeded into existing vegetation such as grass cover.

Grows as a perennial in Zone 3 or warmer. Prefers full sun and cool summer conditions. It can be planted in spring or fall, however, young plants require at least six weeks of growing season before freezing temperatures if planted in fall. The plants are hardy and can be mowed when needed. Most growers mow at least once during or after flowering.

Can be used with EcoTea Seed Inoculant for increased nutrient efficiency, improved root development and higher disease resistance.
