Description
Perennial Ryegrass is a vigorous cool-season grass that can go from planting to mowable lawn in as little as 3 weeks. It is a resilient, robust species that forms clumps instead of spreading through rhizomes.
The plants easily regenerate from wear and tear, such as foot traffic, making it a preferred choice for grassed pathways and sports fields. Additionally, it serves as one of the most commonly used pasture grasses for grazing livestock, reaching a grazing-ready state within 58 days from planting.
Perennial ryegrass also possesses a high level of resistance to common diseases that regularly affect other grass species. It grows well as a single crop or blends very well with other grasses, clovers and wildflowers.
Its extensive fibrous root system can grow up to three times deeper than its top growth. Perennial ryegrass will grow 30 to 90 cm annually for 3-4 years and is competitive and aggressive once established.
When used as a cover crop, it helps prevent erosion, builds soil organic matter, improves soil tilth, captures residual nitrogen and can significantly increase the rooting depth of other crops. It is also often used as a nurse crop for Sweet clover, allowing the young plants to be protected while they establish.
Perennial ryegrass does very well on medium or heavy soils, can tolerate wet conditions and does best when planted before or after the hottest summer temperatures.
