Cover crops can be planted in spring, summer or fall! They help repair poor soils, keep them healthy, and provide food for pollinators!
Description
Barley is one of the most adaptable and efficient spring-seeded cover crops. It establishes quickly in cool soils, produces reliable biomass, and delivers strong soil-health benefits, especially in low-fertility soils.
Deep, fibrous roots help stabilize soil, preventing erosion and nutrient runoff, especially in lighter soils. Barley is more drought-tolerant than oats or wheat, making it well-suited to light soils or locations with variable moisture conditions.
Barley has good salinity tolerance, meaning it can be planted in challenging soils where other crops do poorly. As a result, it is often used to help remediate poor soils containing high salts or other contaminants.
Although barley is a great cover crop choice, it can also be harvested for soups and cereals or used for malting beer.
