Description

Romanian Red is a robust, Porcelain variety that grows large plants. It has some of the highest levels of allicin, which is linked to the many health benefits associated with garlic.   

Originally brought to British Columbia from Romania, it was one of the earliest garlic varieties introduced to North America. Under certain growing conditions, Romanian Red can display deeper colouration and purple colouring, which lends to its name. 

When cooked, it has a wonderful straightforward character, with more complexity than a typical Porcelain variety. 

Romanian Red performs very well in cold climates and is a very robust grower that produces large plants that stand out. It has big bulbs with very large cloves (averages 4 to 5 cloves per bulb). Scape removal and good soil fertility is important for maximum bulb size.

Garlic is a heavy feeder. For best results, apply a well-balanced organic fertilizer at planting and in spring. Planting a green manure cover crop the season before growing garlic is also recommended. 

Grow Guide
  • Date: September 15 - November 15. Plant 3 to 6 weeks before ground freezes
  • Planting: Push cloves into loose soil with the tips pointing up
  • Depth: 1-2" (from clove tip to soil surface)
  • Spacing: 10-12" between rows, cloves 5-6" apart within row
  • Fertility: Garlic performs best in fertile soils. Organic fertilizer is recommended 
  • Mulching: Cover with 4-5" of straw, grass or leaves in fall. Remove in spring. 
  • Watering: 1"/week clay soil, 2"/week sandy soils
  • Scapes: Cut and harvest scapes when beginning to curl
  • Harvest: Dig bulbs when plants have 3 to 4 green leaves remaining
  • Drying: Place bulbs in a warm, dry area with lots of air flow.
